Moanalu誕生の話

The one OCEAN JEWELRYは海を愛する方の新たなジュエリーの選択肢を作りたいというきっかけで生まれました。

ブランド発足当初はバングルやリングを先行して発表したので順番こそ逆になっていますが、今年の初めと今回発表したMoanalu/Naluペンダントこそ実はブランドが誕生するきっかけに大きく関わっているという事は初めてお話するかもしれません。

あるとき知り合った渋い男性サーファーと話していた時の事です。

仕事の話になり、当時私が主に彫刻していたハワイアンジュエリーというものも知っている（実際に昔愛用していた）との事だったので「現在はどうですか？」と聞いてみたところ「今はネイティブアメリカンジュエリー」などを好んで着けているという返答でした。
実際にその方はフェザーのペンダントとリングを身につけていました。

これも初言かもしれませんが職人人生はネイティブアメリカンジュエリーの制作者から開始しており、その世界観は当時も今も変わらず好きなのでとくに深く考える必要は無かったのかもしれません。
ただ、その時は「海の男が海ではなく陸（ネイティブアメリカンジュエリー）を選んでいる」という単純な事実に、何とも言えない違和感を感じた事を覚えています。

ネイティブ系アクセサリーと言ったらフェザーを連想される方も多いのではと思います。

では海は？

「波」の構想はその時に始まりました。

実は最初の構想はフラット型でした。
ただ、平面に彫刻しただけでは躍動感に欠けるという問題に直面し、その後試作品を作っては不採用にしという事を何度も繰り返して現在の形になったというのが大まかな経緯です。

Moanalu/Naluペンダントのような形をしたアイテムは個人的に知る限りでは見たことがなく、私どもにとっては市場に対する新たな挑戦です。

引き続き「オーシャンジュリー」で連想いただけるようなアイテム作りに励んでまいりますので今後もどうぞ宜しくお願い申し上げます。

The one OCEAN JEWELRY was born with the goal of providing a new jewelry selection for ocean lovers.

Since bangles and rings were released first when the brand was launched, the story might sound reversed, however, Moanalu/Nalu pendants are actually an item which is deeply related to the birth of the brand and it’s concept.

The story starts when I met a cool male surfer a few years ago.

We started talking about work, and he mentioned that he’s familiar with “Hawaiian jewelry” which I was mainly engraving at the time (in fact, he said he had some in his younger years), so I asked him, “How about now?” and he replied that nowadays he prefers “Native American jewelry.”
He was actually wearing a feather pendant and a ring.

This may be the first time mentioning this, but I started my crafting career as a craftsman of Native American jewelry, and since then till now, I still love the world of the genre, so I probably didn’t need to think too deeply about what I’m about to say.
However, at that time, I remember feeling kind of weird, something similar to being uncomfortable over the simple fact that “An Ocean lover chose Land (Native American jewelry) instead of Ocean”.

When you think of “Native American accessories”, I assume many people imagine feathers.

How about the “Ocean”?

This is when the whole “Wave” idea began.

Actually, the initial concept was something flat.
However, after encountering the problem of just carving on a flat surface is lacking a sense of dynamism, we repeatedly made prototypes over and over, resulting in the current form.

Land is Feather.
Ocean is Wave.

Personally, I’ve never seen an item shaped like the Moanalu/Nalu pendant, so this is a new and a big challenge for us in the market.
